Centennial of Japan's Annexation of Korea
100 years ago on August 22, 1910, Japan forcefully annexed Korea -- setting in motion a tragic and volatile period for modern Korea that saw colonialism, liberation, division, war and continuing division. Though there were Korean collaborators to Japanese colonial rule, there were also others who took arms to deter Japanese aggression, such as the Righteous Army pictured above, and other groups in Manchuria and Northeast China.
